Abstract

Metacognition—the ability to think about, monitor, and regulate one’s own thinking has become an important concept in contemporary education. This qualitative research paper explores teachers’ perspectives and pedagogical practices concerning the use of metacognition in classroom teaching. It focuses on how teachers understand metacognition, how they integrate planning, monitoring, evaluation, questioning, think-aloud modelling, self-assessment, feedback, and reflection into everyday instruction, and what factors influence implementation. An interpretive qualitative design is proposed using semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, reflective teacher notes, and classroom artefacts. Thematic analysis is used to organize the inquiry around recurring themes. The literature indicates that explicit teaching of planning, monitoring, and evaluation can support students’ self-regulated learning, while effective implementation depends on teachers’ pedagogical knowledge, subject context, professional development, and classroom conditions. The paper argues that metacognition is most meaningful when embedded within normal subject teaching rather than taught as a detached set of generic skills. Teacher modelling, purposeful questioning, guided practice, formative feedback, and gradual transfer of responsibility can help students become more reflective and independent learners. The study offers implications for classroom pedagogy, teacher education, curriculum planning, assessment, and future qualitative research.
