| Abstract | The Revolt of 1857 was the most formidable challenge to the East India Company in nineteenth-century India. It began as a military uprising among Bengal Army sepoys but rapidly acquired diverse civil, agrarian and political forms in Delhi, Awadh, Rohilkhand, Bundelkhand, Kanpur and parts of Bihar and Central India. This paper examines its long-term political, economic, military and socio-religious causes; reconstructs the principal stages of the uprising; evaluates competing interpretations of its nature; and assesses its historical consequences. It argues that the revolt cannot be reduced either to a barrack mutiny or described without qualification as a fully developed national war. The military rebellion supplied organization, weapons and momentum, while dispossessed rulers, taluqdars, peasants, artisans, religious figures and urban groups gave it wider social depth according to local grievances. Its geographical limits, fragmented leadership and absence of a common programme prevented it from becoming an all-India national movement. Nevertheless, the rebels' repeated appeal to legitimate indigenous authority and their rejection of Company rule gave the struggle an unmistakably anti-colonial dimension. The uprising ended Company government, reshaped the colonial army, altered British policies toward princes and landed elites, and left a powerful memory later incorporated into Indian nationalism. The paper therefore understands 1857 as a connected set of military mutinies and popular rebellions whose meaning changed across regions but whose cumulative effect transformed the structure and political imagination of colonial India. |
